Sound Meditation Therapy
We are rhythmic beings that exist in the midst of an ocean of periodic patterns and a flow that the ancient Taoists referred to as "The Watercourse Way." In health, our bodies respond to these changing patterns and harmonic tensions in life with agility and grace, allowing our emotions to echo our experience freely without attachment, and permitting our minds to imagine new relationships, rather than get stuck in old trains of thought that are often cast in fear. If you have ever had the experience of listening to a song that somehow expresses, both in words and music, exactly what your present experience is, and transforms it into something more Universal, then you know the power of music to mirror, even in its melodic shape, the core of your changing being, and to connect it to the greater flow around us.
In my lifetime of studying music and composing it, of deeply experimenting with the basic nature of sound and harmony through extended improvisation, I have discovered the unique and inherent qualities of each tone (and chords) that strengthen and heal the relationships they harmonize with. A textbook of western music will tell you, for instance, that A Minor and D Minor have an equivalent scale structure, and that everything which can be expressed in A Minor can be transposed into D Minor. I have learned through personal experience, however, that this is not the case. A Minor has unique properties that cause it to resonate in a different way emotionally than does D Minor.
You life has a song to it. This is ancient wisdom expressed in diverse cultures, from the Australian Aboriginal peoples, to the Celtic peoples, to the Mississippi Blues; it is a philosophical tenet found in the Vedas of ancient India.
Sound Meditation Therapy consists of guided relaxation and cranial sacral work to help you enter a state of deep restfulness and receptivity, a place of gentle contemplation of the dynamics which are currently structuring your life, without focusing on the need for solutions or answers. From that point, I as the practitioner, will lead you on a journey through a tapestry of music that I create, inspired by information I have gathered from you beforehand, in an interview. Receiving the sound and responding to it on a physical, emotional, and mental level will allow you to transform, within yourself, the very way you are holding the issues in your life. This process is similar to meditation upon a Zen Koan, where one does not "answer" the question posed, but uses the question as a pivot, to break through the ideas, feelings, and sensations surrounding reality in the first place. Using sound and music in this way is very powerful; a lot of change can be facilitated in just one session.
I am currently offering sessions at my studio space, $25 for 1-1.5 hours (please leave 1.5 hours open for your session), and I offer a no-risk trial: only pay me if you feel you gained something from the experience. No justifications required.
Sessions are currently available on Sundays or Mondays, and evenings with advance notice. See "Bodywork" for my studio location in Eugene. Contact me for more information. Please see my music page for more on my general philosophy of sound.
